Stormwater management is necessary for areas undergoing new development because runoff from these areas has been shown to significantly affect receiving waters.
Pollution prevention begins during active construction. However, it must be practiced throughout the life of the site, continuing into post construction and is the responsibiity of the property owner and business/activity operator. Stormwater pollution prevention activities should be tailored to capture typical pollutants from the land use activity occurring on the site.
Development work on property greater than one acre requires a Drainage and Sedimentation Control Plan which must be approved by TDEC. Copies of the Stormwater Ordinance, which details the requirements of the control plan, can be obtained from Town Hall or downloaded from the Builder Inspector’s page HERE.
The following are ordinances that aim to reduce pollution through various stormwater BMP’s. Engineers and developors must ensure that they are in compliance with these regulations. For further information on permitting, see the Building Inspector’s page HERE. You may also review the Northeast Tennessee BMP Manual.
