The Town of Jonesborough is proud to partnerwith Johnson City and Washington County Schools on their third annual Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr Day of ServiceExhibition. The theme for this year’sregional celebration is, The Beloved Community: It Begins With Me. “The McKinney Center is a perfect place forsuch an event,” states McKinney Center Director, Theresa Hammons. “Thisbuilding was built and opened in 1940 as the Booker T. Washington School andserved African American students K-8th grade. It was a building that divided ourcommunity’s children and now it is a safe space to bring everyonetogether. We couldn’t be prouder to hostthis exhibition for a third year.”
The regional MLK Day of ServiceCommittee chose the theme, It Begins With Me, in hopes that the studentswill create and express in their or own or group art, how they can make adifference in the world.
Students of all gradelevels and abilities are encouraged to make artwork for the exhibit and willwork directly with their art teachers at their respective schools to create theartwork for display.
Elementary School –Elementary students are encouraged to draw, paint or color artwork using anymedium they’d like that we are able to display.
Middle School – MiddleSchool students can also submit their artwork, or they can complete a group projector essay.
High School – High Schoolstudents can submit artwork, an essay, group project, or they are encouraged touse video and photography as a way to express their art.
Students will be notifiedabout this project by their school’s related art teachers. Students may also turn in their projects totheir related art teachers for submission into the exhibition.
The exhibition will be onpublic display January 20 - 23, 8am – 5pm with a closing reception on Thursday,January 23, 6-8pm. Culinary Art studentswill be providing light refreshments for the reception and the event is freeand open to the public.

The Town of Jonesborough is proud to partnerwith Johnson City and Washington County Schools on their third annual Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr Day of ServiceExhibition. The theme for this year’sregional celebration is, The Beloved Community: It Begins With Me. “The McKinney Center is a perfect place forsuch an event,” states McKinney Center Director, Theresa Hammons. “Thisbuilding was built and opened in 1940 as the Booker T. Washington School andserved African American students K-8th grade. It was a building that divided ourcommunity’s children and now it is a safe space to bring everyonetogether. We couldn’t be prouder to hostthis exhibition for a third year.”
The regional MLK Day of ServiceCommittee chose the theme, It Begins With Me, in hopes that the studentswill create and express in their or own or group art, how they can make adifference in the world.
Students of all gradelevels and abilities are encouraged to make artwork for the exhibit and willwork directly with their art teachers at their respective schools to create theartwork for display.
Elementary School –Elementary students are encouraged to draw, paint or color artwork using anymedium they’d like that we are able to display.
Middle School – MiddleSchool students can also submit their artwork, or they can complete a group projector essay.
High School – High Schoolstudents can submit artwork, an essay, group project, or they are encouraged touse video and photography as a way to express their art.
Students will be notifiedabout this project by their school’s related art teachers. Students may also turn in their projects totheir related art teachers for submission into the exhibition.
The exhibition will be onpublic display January 20 - 23, 8am – 5pm with a closing reception on Thursday,January 23, 6-8pm. Culinary Art studentswill be providing light refreshments for the reception and the event is freeand open to the public.
