Historic Jonesborough boasts a vibrant arts community, which is an integral part of our rich culture. Though there are many forums for artists to express themselves,  display and sell their wares, the Town of Jonesborough supports year round programs for artists of all ages to learn, experience and perform in arenas that might only be available in a much larger community. The Town of Jonesborough most recently acquired the old Jackson Theatre in historic downtown. The renovation and programming of that facility will only add to the thriving programs and performances going on in the two facilities list below.

McKinneyfrontMcKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School located at 103 Franklin Avenue is the renovated Booker T. Washington School and houses Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts.  This beautiful facility holds arts programming year-round, hosts special events and is available for rental for meetings, conferences, weddings and special occasions. The Center is home to Jonesborough’s Open Juried Art Show in the spring and plans are to expand arts related activities in the future. Additionally the facilities house art education classes such as painting, drawing, Art Trek Camp, Jonesborough Story Adventures, the Power of Sculpture and Mosaic Masterpieces. The versatility of this facility also allows for programming and performances in the theatrical and musical art forms. Some programs already done with success are tap dancing, Animate Your Story, the children's versions of "Cinderella" and "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and musical instrument instructions. Jonesborough Yarn Exchange Radio Show provides Jonesborough with a monthly live radio performance at the International Storytelling Center in Downtown Jonesborough, and provides the Tri-Cities region with a monthly broadcast of these shows on the local NPR station 89.5 FM. These productions celebrate the culture, history and stories of the people of Jonesborough and the Southern Appalachian Region. Now in its third season, “A Night with the Yarn Exchange” is a monthly, scripted production, based on local stories, and performed by an inter-generational, multi-cultural cast of local actors, storytellers, and musicians, to create an audio patchwork quilt of what it means to be home in the mountains. The Jonesborough Yarn Exchange is a community building group, and open to anyone who would like to participate. Everyone is welcome, from all ages and backgrounds, regardless of experience. If you live here, you belong! If you have a story to tell, this is the place! In addition to the live performances and the local broadcasts, the production is also streamed online by the local NPR affiliate WETS FM 89.5 on their HD channel 1, so the world can listen to and be inspired by the stories of Jonesborough, Tennessee, and the people of Appalachia. The radio performances are aired the last Wednesday of the month  HERE. Yarn Exchange information can be found HERE.   To get more information, call 423.794.6320 .
