Property Tax Information

Property tax assessments for the Town of Jonesborough are performed by the Washington County Tax Assessor's Office. Reappraisals are performed every five years. A property reappraisal was completed in 2014. The next property reappraisal will take place in 2019.

 

Pay 2016 and 2017 Property Taxes by Credit Card 

You can now pay your property taxes by credit card or view a history of your property taxes. You can pay 2016 and 2017 taxes online. There are three types of property tax assessments:

  

  • Single family dwellings or residential real property is assessed at 25% of the appraised market value of the dwelling.
  • Commercial real property is assessed at 40% of the appraised market value of the property.
  • Commercial personal property is assessed at 30% of the appraised market value of the property.

 

The 2017 property tax rate in Jonesborough is $1.3105 per $100 of assessed value of property.

 

The Washington County tax rate is currently $2.3798 per $100 of assessed value.

 

A property owner has the right to appeal the appraised value of his or her property by contacting the Washington County Tax Assessor's Office at 423.753.1670 during normal business hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Tax Assessor will then schedule a meeting between the property owner and the five-member Washington County Board of Equalization. If not satisfied with the decision of the local Board of Equalization, a property owner may then appeal to the State Board of Equalization and then to the Assessment Appeals Commission. If still not satisfied, then a property owner may seek remedy through the court system.

Property Tax Relief

Property tax relief is available through a program offered by the State of Tennessee for qualified elderly and disabled homeowners and permanently disabled veterans. You may apply when property taxes become due in your city or county. Application may be made in your County Trustee's Office or the Jonesborough City Recorder's Office or to receive a tax relief brochure by mail, contact the Jonesborough Recorder's Office at 423.753.1040 or the Washington County Trustee's Office at 423.753.1601. If you qualify for State tax relief the Town of Jonesborough will match the amount of the State tax relief, not to exceed your property tax liability.

2017 Property Taxes
City property taxes for the year 2017 are mailed in October 2017, and are due and payable from October 2017, through February 2018. City property taxes for 2017 bear penalty and interest at the rate of one and one-half percent (1.5%) per month for each month the taxes are delinquent beginning March 1, 2018. City property taxes may be paid at the Recorder's Office (Water Department) in Town Hall. 2016 Delinquent Property Taxes
Please be advised that on April 1, 2018, additional penalties and costs will be imposed on all unpaid Jonesborough city taxes assessed against real and personal property for the year 2016. These additional penalties and costs are imposed by State statute to cover the expense of filing suit to collect the unpaid taxes.  Once the suit is filed on April 1, 2018, the 2016 taxes must  be paid at the Office of Clerk & Master located at the Washington County Courthouse in Jonesborough.
