Jonesborough operates top-notch water and wastewater systems that serve not only the Town of Jonesborough, but also areas outside of the Jonesborough's city limits. The Jonesborough Regional Water System serves a large portion of Washington County from Unicoi County to the Fall Branch area and from the Greene County line to the area just east of Jonesborough's city limits. The division between Jonesborough's water system and the adjoining Johnson City Water System is along Sycamore Drive and Buncombe Hill Road just east and southeast of Jonesborough, and Headtown Rd, John France Rd, and Hales Chapel Rd to the north. Jonesborough gets its raw water from the Nolichucky River, and the Water Plant is in the area of the Lamar Community.
The Water System has five departments which include:
Water Administration operates out of the Town Recorder's Office at Town Hall on Boone Street in Jonesborough. All water billing and water bill payments are handled out of the Recorders Office which is open to the public Monday - Friday from 8 am. until 4:30 pm. Requests for new water service in the Jonesborough Water System are taken at the Recorders Office at Town Hall. You may fill out the attached HERE and bring it to Town Hall to pay fee.
The Meter Reading staff read and maintain water meters in the entire system. The meter reading staff undertakes all re-checks, cut-offs and any trouble shooting with down meters in addition to their reading duties.
Water Distribution is responsible for water line extensions and water line maintenance and repairs throughout the system. Water Distribution staff provide service on fire hydrants and all valves in the water system. They also are responsible for water testing associated with all new construction and water line repairs.
Water Treatment oversees the operation of the water system's intake on the Nolichucky River, the water treatment plant, as well as the water reservoirs and pump stations.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant has just been expanded, and serves all of the Town of Jonesborough as well as the Washington County Industrial Park west of town and some areas in between. The treatment facility is located off Britt Drive at the westend of Jonesborough near the railroad tracks.
The clean water effluent from the plant’s treatment process is pumped over 6 miles and discharges into the Nolichucky River at Mile Marker 84.5. Wastewater staff operate the treatment facility and handle the maintenance and repair of all sewer collection lines, manholes and pump stations.
